Illinois EPA and Vermilion County Recycling collecting unused and expired prescription medicines
SPRINGFIELD - To mark National Poison Prevention Week, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Director Doug Scott today announced that next week residents of Vermillion County will have an alternative way to dispose of unused prescription medicines in an environmentally sound manner, diverting them from landfills and waterways.
Just in time for Spring Vermillion County residents will be given the opportunity to remove unused drugs from their households that have accumulated over the winter months, and to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner at a Prescription Drug Collection sponsored by the Illinois EPA, Vermilion County Recycling and Carle Rx Express.
"This collection gives residents the chance to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of unused or unwanted pharmaceuticals that have been taking up space in their home. The week-long collection is beneficial not only to citizens who want get rid of unused antibiotics or other drugs, but it also benefits the environment by keeping them out of landfills and Illinois waterways," said Director Scott.
The pharmaceutical collection will take place at Carle Rx Express, located at 311 W. Fairchild Street in Danville, for one week only, beginning Monday, March 24 through Saturday, March 29 during the hours 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Saturday.
Residents are encouraged to use the drive-thru window on the south east side of the building or enter the building at the front door and go to Suite B to dispose of their unused pharmaceuticals.
"This partnership with Carle Rx Express and the Illinois EPA is able to provide Vermilion County residents the opportunity to dispose of their unwanted medications during this week. It is hard breaking the old habit of flushing medications down the drain," said Lynn Wolgamot, Vermilion County Recycling Coordinator. "Common sense dictates a different disposal opportunity is needed and it is being offered during National Poison Prevention Week."
For residents who cannot attend the week long Prescription Drug Collection, the Illinois EPA has scheduled 10 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events across the state, starting Saturday, April 12. A HHW collection schedule can also be found on the Agency's web page: http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/hazardous-waste/household-haz-waste/hhwc-schedule.html
For any questions about the collection of unused pharmaceuticals and prescription drugs, call John Bodensteiner, Pharmacist, at (217) 431-7975 or Lynn Wolgamot, Recycling Coordinator, at (217) 260-3483.
