West Downtown Rockford Historic District listed in National Register of Historic Places
ROCKFORD - The West Downtown Rockford Historic District, roughly bounded by Park Avenue, State, Church and Wyman Streets, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 5, 2007 by the National Park Service.
"The West Downtown Historic District's wonderfully intact architectural styles spanning more than 100 years represent the city's building evolution," said Robert Coomer, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. "This is a prestigious recognition for Rockford."
""The recognition by the National Register of Historic Places of the West Downtown Historic District and the impact this part of Rockford has made on Northern Illinois over the last 100 years is exciting and well deserved. Thanks to all who helped make this possible," said Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford).
"This is a historic moment for the City of Rockford. We are doing everything we can to rebuild downtown Rockford, and this designation will enhance those efforts," said State Rep. Chuck Jefferson (D-Rockford).
"This designation as a National Historic District highlights the wonderful architectural history of west downtown Rockford, and will spur historical reconstruction and investment," said State Rep. Dave Winters (R-Rockford). "This area contains the earliest part of Rockford's growth, and still has some absolute gems. I applaud the National Park Service on this designation and look forward to the enhanced quality of community life it will support."
Rockford was for many years the second largest city in Illinois, and West Downtown was its major commercial, financial and retail hub containing department stores, financial institutions, theaters, and professional offices of all kinds. The architecture found in the district represents more than 100 years of building and development, with examples of many architectural styles and commercial types designed by prominent local as well as Chicago architectural firms.
