Blacksmith participants sought for 25th Annual "Hammer In" April 14 - 15 at Lincoln's New Salem

PETERSBURG - Blacksmiths from throughout the Midwest are encouraged to take part in the Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site's 25th Annual "Hammer In" scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. near Petersburg, Illinois.
 
This year's workshop for professional and hobby blacksmiths will feature guest demonstrations by Sheldon Browder and Steve Mankowski of Colonial Williamsburg.  As part of their demonstration, Sheldon and Steve will likely include the forging and finish filing of socket chisels, axes, foot adzes, cooking utensils, and a horse saddle stirrup.
 
A gallery of work created by participants will be set up for viewing, and participants are encouraged to bring old tools to sell or trade.  Eye protection must be worn by all participants and spectators in the demonstration area.
 
Registration is $10 per day if received by April 1.  Late registration or registration at the door is $15.  Free coffee and donuts will be provided each morning, and a free dinner served Saturday night for all paid registrants.  To obtain a registration form, please call Lincoln's New Salem (217) 632-4000.
 
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, located along Route 97 near Petersburg, is administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.  The "Hammer In" is cosponsored by the agency and the New Salem Lincoln League, the site's not for profit support organization.
