Student historians from Lincolnshire, Oak Forest, East Aurora, Chicago, Mendota earn awards at National History Day

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Several Illinois students won national awards during the National History Day competition held June 11 - 15 in College Park, Maryland.  These students were among those chosen at the May 3 Illinois History Expo to represent the state in this national competition.  The winners are:   
 
  • Rahul Gorawara, Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire.  Second place, senior research paper "Gautreaux vs. Chicago Housing Authority:  How Gatreaux's Attempt to Desegregate Public Housing Provided an Effective Means for Reducing Urban Decay."  Teacher:  Christopher Salituro.
  • Keli Walsh, St. Luke Academy, Chicago.  Fourth place, junior documentary, "Standing Up for Chicago."  Teacher:  Laurie Abrahamson.  She also won Outstanding Elementary School State Project.
  • Mendota High School.  Fifth place, junior performance, "Radium Girls."  Student winners:  Haley Sack, Stevie Croisant, Madeline Piller, Isaac Piller and Abigael Morris.  Teacher:  Susan Sack.
  • Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire.  Seventh place, senior group documentary "Carrying the Burden:  The Clyde Kennard Story."  Student winners:  Mona Ghadiri, Callie McCune and Agnes Mazur.  Teacher:  Barry Bradford.  These students also won the award for Outstanding High School State Project.
  • Gian Santos, independent student from Oak Forest.  Seventh place, senior individual documentary "Justice through Science: Kameny's Pioneering Defense of Homosexuality."
  • Chelsea Farmer, Ogden Elementary School, Chicago.  Ninth place, junior research paper, "Architectural Preservation Pioneer:  Richard Nickels' Fight to Save Chicago's Historical Buildings."  Teacher:  W. Eric Calderon.
  • East Aurora High School.  Eleventh place, senior group performance "Refugio Martinez:  Taking a Stand in the Packinghouses."  Student winners:  Aracelli Gutierrez, Sarah Peara, Eliseo Martinez, Felipe Rodriguez and Aracelly Gonzales.  Teacher:  Cathy Bednar.
  • Peter Contos, independent student from Chicago.  Twelfth place, junior exhibit "Faces of Aunt Jemima."
  • Lincoln Park High School, Chicago.  Thirteenth place, senior exhibit "Blacks in the White City: Taking a Stand at the Fair."  Student winners:  Ivan Favelevic and Montana Young.  Teacher:  Ayesha Ahmad.
  • Ogden Elementary School, Chicago.  Fourteenth place, junior performance "Jewish Labor Committee and Their Efforts to Save European Jews from Nazism."  Student winners:  Deen Rosenberg and Rachael Brown.  Teacher:  W. Eric Calderon.
Special Awards
 
History Channel Award for a Senior Entry Tied to a Historic Site
Brian Lis, Adrian Mikocewicz, Chris Ciszynski, and Jonathan Taub of Lincoln Park High School, Chicago, senior documentary "Maxwell Street Market:  Taking a Stand by Taking the Stand."  Teacher:  Jennifer Johnson.
 
Jamestown 400th Anniversary Award
All expenses paid scholarship to attend the 400th anniversary of founding of Jamestown presented to one scholar from each state.  Omar Mesina, Orozco Academy, Chicago, junior documentary "C.O.R.E."  Teacher:  Andre Lemoine.
 
            The Illinois History Expo program is coordinated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's Education Services Program.
