QUINN ANNOUNCES OPERATION HERO FOR HIRE Special Website Sponsored by CareerBuilder.com Helps Veterans Find Jobs!

Press Release - Monday, May 22, 2006

CHICAGO—Today, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn announced Operation Hero for Hire - a national program sponsored by CareerBuilder.com to help military veterans find jobs.

Operation Hero for Hire was created when Quinn's office and the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with CareerBuilder.com to develop a job site that connects veterans with employers who value their military experience and work ethic. This statewide effort quickly grew into a nationwide initiative with employers from nearly all 50 states participating.

Employers who seek to hire veterans may post their job opportunities with Operation Hero for Hire for free. In addition to job listings, Operation Hero for Hire offers resume advice and interview tips specifically tailored for military veterans.

Operation Hero for Hire comes at a time when, across the nation, military men and women are struggling to find jobs when they return from duty. Hardest hit are the youngest veterans - between 20 and 24 years old - whose unemployment rate nationwide was 16 percent last year. Many of these young men and women enter the military straight out of high school, and when they return home their military experience is not valued by employers. Operation Hero for Hire aims to change that.

"It is our responsibility to take care of Illinois soldiers who have answered our country's call to duty and fought to protect our democracy," Quinn said. "Operation Hero for Hire gives all our veterans the opportunity to use what they've learned in the military to build solid careers here on the homefront. I encourage veterans who are looking for a job and every business that wants top-notch, hard-working employees, to give Operation Hero for Hire a try."

Quinn was joined by Brent Rasmussen, Chief Operating Officer for CareerBuilder.com, Roy Dolgos, Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, and William Hudson, 1st Division Commander of the American Legion Department of Illinois.

CareerBuilder.com is the nation's largest online job site with more than 20 million visitors and more than 1 million jobs. More than 250,000 employers use CareerBuilder.com.
