IEPA Grants Provisional Variance from Permit Limit to Salt Creek Sanitary District During Plant Upgrade
SPRINGFIELD --- The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has granted a 45-day provisional variance to the Salt Creek Sanitary District (District), in DuPage County, allowing it to exceed its daily maximum limits for two components of its wastewater discharge. The District requested the provisional variance while it takes its tertiary filters out of service to complete a plant upgrade.
The District is located at 201 South Route 83, in Villa Park.
After reviewing the petition, the Agency determined that: 1) environmental impact from the variance should be minimal; and 4) there are no federal regulations that would prohibit granting the request.
The provisional variance temporarily raises the allowed daily maximum limits for Total Suspended Solids and for Carbonaceous Biochemical Oxygen Demand above the limits specified in the District's National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. NPDES permits are required under the federal Clean Water Act for activities that discharge to the waters of the state, including the operation of wastewater treatment plants.
The variance runs from December 21, 2005, to Saturday, February 4, 2006, and requires the District to notify the Agency when construction is completed. All other treatment processes will remain in operation during the work, and other NPDES permit limits will remain.
