QUINN RECOGNIZES ILLINOIS' OWN "DOC HOLLYWOODS" FOR THEIR SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO RURAL HEALTH CARE

Press Release - Wednesday, November 09, 2005

SPRINGFIELD -- Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn joined the Illinois Rural Health Association and SIU School of Medicine today to honor 18 doctors from across the state for their commitment to improving the health of rural residents.

Doc Hollywood Day -- an event created by the National Rural Health Association -- started as a way to encourage more people to enter the field of rural health care and to also increase awareness of medical needs in underserved areas.

"All Illinois citizens deserve access to decent health care," said Quinn.  "We depend on doctors and I salute these unsung heroes for going above and beyond to bring medical attention to underserved areas."

Doctors were presented with the Rural Physicians of Excellence Award and a declaration from
Lt. Governor Quinn.

This is the first year Illinois is taking part in Doc Hollywood Day events.  It joins Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

"So many of our citizens living in rural parts of the state are in dire need of transportation just to visit their doctor," Quinn said.  "These doctors make it a point to bring care to communities.  We need to get the word out that we need more medical professionals in the field so everyone can get decent care."

Quinn is chairman of the Governor's Rural Affairs Council, which was created to improve the quality of life for residents of rural Illinois.  The Council's issues include expansion of All-American energy sources, closing the digital divide, and improving health care, housing, transportation and access to clean water.  To learn more, visit www.RuralAffairsCouncil.il.gov.
