QUINN ANNOUNCES CARE PACKAGES ENROUTE TO TROOPS DEPLOYED TO HURRICANE-RAVAGED LOUISIANA AND MISSISSIPPI
NAPERVILLE -Today, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn joined Joanne Bradna of Operation Support Our Troops Illinois at the Naperville Jaycees "Last Fling" Labor Day Parade to announce that care packages will be sent to troops based in and deployed to Louisiana and Mississippi, areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Operation Support Our Troops Illinois is a non-profit organization that sends care packages to servicemembers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Care packages include items difficult to obtain overseas such as powdered drink mix, athletic socks, canned tuna, chicken, or beef products, snack bars, and canned fruit.
To date, Operation Support Our Troops Illinois has delivered more than 6,000 care packages to servicemembers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Approximately 120 boxes are shipped each week from the Chicagoland area.
It is estimated that as many as 40,000 troops will be serving in Louisiana and Mississippi as the effort to evacuate citizens and maintain order continues. Operation Support Our Troops Illinois will send care packages to those troops for the duration of their service.
Care packages will continue to be sent to troops serving overseas.
There are more than 5,700 Illinois National Guardsmen and reservists serving on active duty in the Global War on Terrorism.
