ILLINOIS STATE POLICE SHOWCASE THE LABORATORY INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LIMS)

Press Release - Wednesday, April 24, 2019

CHICAGO, IL -Illinois State Police (ISP) Acting Director Brendan F. Kelly is pleased to announce continuing significant enhancements to the ISP evidence collection and tracking process through the LIMS.

In December 2018, the ISP implemented the LIMS, a system which would incorporate new efficiencies and assist in a more effective and efficient tracking of evidence and analysis. In conjunction with the Porter Lee Corporation, the LIMS was developed over a two-year period of design, development, and testing. Several associated efficiency initiatives and pilot programs completed during this period proved successful and have been incorporated into the new system. "It is the mission of the ISP Division of Forensic Services (DFS) to deliver complete, accurate, and timely crime scene evidence collection and forensic laboratory analysis. The LIMS allows us this opportunity," stated Acting Director Kelly.

On April 24, 2019, the ISP showcased this process during a demonstration at the Forensic Science Center at Chicago. Media outlets were able to view evidence collection at a mock crime scene and see it delivered for analysis to the laboratory in a real-time manner through the LIMS. Key features of the LIMS which are designed to enhance the laboratory's ability to track, analyze, and report findings of evidence were also highlighted. "This data can now be streamlined and allow for a more manageable flow of information," continued Kelly. With the implementation of LIMS, ISP is taking advantage of today's technology to allow for more efficient evidence tracking and analysis, and accelerate report turn-around time.

"Our agency will continually strive to provide the best services to the citizens of Illinois and as such, will constantly seek for ways in which to enhance our systems," concluded Kelly.
