University of Illinois at Chicago Offers New Course for Managers of Disability Organizations

The University of Illinois at Chicago would like to share with you an exciting opportunity for managers of disability organizations to develop their management skills in a new blended online course through the Department of Disability and Human Development (DHD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  This class can be taken as part of the Management and Leadership Certificate program or Master of Science program in Disability and Human Development.

DHD 547: Analysis and Comparison of For-Profit and Non-Profit Organizations

An Online Course
January 14-May 6th, 2009
3 sessions in person or by live video-conference
Instructor Dale Mitchell, PhD

This online course will cover organizational theory and concepts and how they relate to real-life experiences in the non-profit disability sector.  Students will learn core organizational theories, with a special emphasis on non-profit agencies serving people with disabilities.  Standard theoretical models of organizations, theories of authority, leadership, and management are discussed and analyzed.  Differences between and for-profit and non-profit organizations are addressed, including budgeting and fiscal management.

While any student is welcome, this course is especially targeted at the professional or manager who is currently working in the disability field.  In order to bridge the theoretical and practical, both instructors will draw upon their own academic and service experience, the work experiences of the students, and occasional guest lecturers from the disability sector. This course will give the student an opportunity to analyze the theoretical structure and design of traditional organizations, how these concepts are (or are not) applicable to real life disability organizations, and compare typical characteristics of for-profit organizations with those of their non-profit counterparts.

Blended Online Approach
Each week’ s course material will be online but we will use a blended online synchronous and asynchronous approach towards teaching the material.  Specifically, there will be 3 online sessions that will be in-person (synchronous) meetings.  What this means, is that the instructors will be in a UIC classrooms for 3 of the weekly course meetings and require students to either attend this classroom session or to use a UIC e-room to participate in the session from a computer at a remote location as it occurs.

Accessibility
Our academic department emphasizes the concept of accessibility of the classroom and course materials.  We especially focus on providing accessible material for students with visual and/or hearing disabilities.  We provide scripts of all audio and video material.  We rely heavily on html format and try to avoid pdf or other formats that may cause problems for screen readers.  We use alternative tags and text files and try to minimize the use of web pages that cause problems for screen readers.  If you need a special format or need some type of accommodation, please let us know as soon as possible and we will work to meet your needs.

This class can be taken as part of the Management and Leadership Certificate program or Master of Science program in Disability and Human Development.
