IDHS Surveying Illinoisans to Gain Valuable Information About Diabetes
Survey results will help prevent and control diabetes which now affects more than 840,000 children and adults

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Illinois State Diabetes Commission have launched an on-line survey to gain information about diabetes in Illinois. The “Speak Out About Diabetes” survey is used to help identify needs or barriers regarding diabetes prevention and control. The survey is available in English and Spanish at www.dhs.state.il.us.

“It’s not easy to manage diabetes, but it’s worth it,” said IDHS Secretary Michelle Saddler. “We know that maintaining glucose control is important to prevent diabetes complications. Also, those with risk factors for diabetes may reduce or delay the onset of diabetes through weight loss and increased regular physical activity.”

The Illinois State Diabetes Commission was established by legislation to identify additional diabetes needs across the state.  Two of the duties are to gather information from the general public on issues pertaining to the prevention, treatment, and control of diabetes and to examine the needs of adults, children, racial and ethnic minorities, and medically underserved populations who have diabetes.  The Commission prepares an annual report for the Governor and legislative leadership.  The report is used to help formulate the state’s diabetes prevention and control plans.

The key messages for everyone – those with diabetes, their family members and those at risk for developing diabetes are: know the risks and warning signs for diabetes; know how to respond to diabetes and who to turn to for information and treatment; and know how to take control and manage diabetes.

In Illinois more than 841,000 adults have been told by their doctor that they have diabetes.  Providing support and resources to help health care providers, people with diabetes and their families maintain their glucose levels is part of the Department of Human Service’s overall mission to assist everyone in achieving maximum self-sufficiency, independence and health. For more information on managing diabetes, visit the IDHS web site and www.dhs.state.il.us.
